Welcome

John Swensson is an emeritus professor of English at De Anza College, where he has spent the last 31 years. While here, he also served as president of the Academic Senate, dean of the Language Arts Division and interim vice president of Instruction. He currently coordinates the Global Education Partnerships at the college.

The Study Abroad program will go to Paris in summer 2022 and has been to London, Vietnam (many times), Taiwan, Beijing, Belize, Kenya and the Philippines.

He first taught English at his alma mater, West Point, and much of the material in his textbook comes from the U.S. Military Academy – the Plebe English "M1A1 Argumentative Theme." He also wrote the writing text for the U.S. Army's Command and General Staff College, and was co-producer with a "co-story" credit for the movie "Fire Birds" with Nicolas Cage, Tommy Lee Jones, Sean Young and portions of the Army's Apache helicopter fleet.

A veteran of the Vietnam conflict, he has an M.A. in English from the University of Virginia and an MBA from the University of Northern Colorado. He counts his teaching (at seven colleges including Foothill and Maui Community College) as his greatest accomplishment after keeping soldiers alive in Vietnam, and he is happy to share his teaching with you.
