Child Development (The Early Years)


Course Description

An introductory course that examines the major physical, psychosocial and cognitive/language developmental milestones for children, both typical and atypical, from conception through middle childhood. There will be an emphasis on interactions between maturational processes and environmental factors. While studying developmental theory and investigative research methodologies, students will observe children, evaluate individual differences and analyze characteristics of development at various stages. (This course meets NAEYC Standards 1 and 3; NBPTS Standards 1 and 4; and CEC Standards 1, 2 and 3.)

C D -10G.-1CY-: This is a Chinese/English bilingual class for Chinese speaking students Only. The purpose of this class is to support Chinese/English dual language childcare workers to advance their learning in early childhood education. The class will provide readings in English and instruct in Mandarin. HYBRID, this class meets each week on campus and online as noted in the class listing. Students must have access to a computer, the internet and an individual email address. Most De Anza classes will use the Canvas course management system. We recommend a laptop or desktop computer to successfully complete the course; a tablet or phone may not be adequate for all assignments and tests.
