    Public Comments

    • Roman Averin:"Hello Senate members, my name is Roman Averin, candidate for Chair of Finance. I am making this statement regarding the two leftover campaign posters documented in the cleanup report.Prior to the deadline, I conducted a thorough two-to-three-hour sweep of the campus and successfully removed about 50 of my posters. I missed these two only because they were no longer in the locations where I originally secured them. The first poster was found lying flat on the ground. Because my securing method successfully held up for over 50 other posters, this poster was an anomaly. It was displaced by weather or unauthorized interference, blowing to a random area outside of my control. The second poster was found attached to a wall. I have already submitted photographic evidence to the committee showing where I originally hung this exact poster. I do not remember moving it to this location; additionally, I specifically checked the outside of the cafeteria multiple times (it seems to be the location in the photo), and it is unlikely that I have missed that. This strongly suggests it was taken down/blown away by the wind and improperly re-attached to this new wall by someone else.Because I executed an honest comprehensive cleanup, and because candidates cannot control acts of nature or third-party tampering, I respectfully ask the Senate to dismiss any penalties. Thank you for your time."
    • Gabe Manglona : "Per Letter E of Article 5, Section 5 of the of the elections code. Any decision to reverse the decision of the admin committee shall require a majority vote as the facilitator. I will not be voting, so my opinions on this matter will not matter like. This is entirely the Senate's decision on whether or not they want to increase, decrease, or leave the penalty up."
    • Maddie: "I want to start off by apologizing for any inconvenience I may have caused. However, I do think this is important to ensure a fair election. So thank you to everyone for taking the time to work through this small process. Before we get started, I want to reiterate what was said during the complaint meeting on March 6. On February 25th at 2:37 PM, I saw a candidate handing out lollipops to potential voters. The code clearly prohibits the use of food and beverages for campaign efforts. The candidate said they stopped distributing candy, but another candidate informed them of a potential violation on Wednesday. They waited until Thursday to ask and finally sent an email on Friday. The candidate waited until they distributed it and God gave them before stopping. By the time they did. Half of the voting period has already passed. The candidate also said they used only 360 laptops with the context of last year's elections. Most winning candidates got about 200 votes across two weeks. We had only half of that time. During such a short amount of time, and especially when a previous candidate won by just 16 votes. 60 is the big deal. There were also arguments of no direct privacy taking place, but avoiding explicit wording does not change the fact that does not change the fact that the candy still acts as a mental incentive. And how are we supposed to enforce a code if all it takes is avoiding a specific string of words. Additionally, the admin committee unanimously agreed that this is a violation of the code, and it's not a question of how big it was either. It's about the principle of violating the codes. They're there to prevent even the risk of influence, and it is not the responsibility. Is it not the responsibility of each candidate to know the codes? and abide by what it says, regardless of who said what. Punishments are supposed to be inconvenient when they like consequence or a lack of good consequence, a precedent will be set in the future when such violations are deemed dismissible. This will be a recurring thing. And frankly speaking, how can we trust someone to shoulder the big responsibilities of student government if they can't follow simple election codes?"
