VIDA Intern Projects

We are committed to providing opportunities for students to build their skills and knowledge outside of the classroom, and recommend that students apply the knowledge they've gained from such courses as in the Leadership & Social Change Certificate program.

There is minimum amount of 3 student staff and 5 to 10 project interns hired per year. Like volunteers, paid interns commit and take on leadership roles, but are accountable for major responsibilities in the projects/campaigns they are placed on. The ultimate goal is to build student power and be agents of change.

Participating students will take 10 hours a week of fieldwork, weekly team meetings, training and mentorship. Also students must have completed, or be currently enrolled in our Certificate in Leadership and Social Change.

Eligibility:

For student employment it is recommended to have less than 180 units and minimum of a 2.0 GPA while being a full time student (12 unit) for a year of internship. However, this can be waived under special circumstances. If students are not eligible for student employment, other arrangements are possible.

This role is designed to offer training, mentorship, and a stipend for De Anza students who have taken extraordinary leadership in projects that promote community college access and success.

Some of those topics include- renter's rights, higher education affordability, immigration, transportation, environment, health and policy issues.

Public Policy School

The Public Policy School Internship is a year-long internship where students will be trained in legislative and policy advocacy and students will utilize the skills learned to effectively advocate on issues concerning community college students, faculty and staff in California before local, state and federal policymakers.

Interns will learn the intricacies of the legislative process, policymaking as well as become knowledgeable in issues facing California Community Colleges. Interns will become adept at developing and delivering effective messaging on the issues Public Policy School is carrying and become effective policy advocates in the process. The focus of advocacy will be local, regional and state policy, although some advocacy with federal legislators may occur.

We envision that we will hire 4-6 Public Policy School Interns for the 2021-2022 year and will be trained by Political Science instructors Jim Nguyen and Bob Stockwell and Angelica Esquivel from VIDA.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Students will take Poli 17/ICS 27 in the Winter quarter
  • Attend regular meetings and trainings
  • Conduct research on policies, craft messaging
  • Willingness to travel to legislative meetings (although the plan is for mostly/all virtual work)
  • Develop and implement logistics for meetings, events
  • Maintain records, documents on Google Drive or similar platform
  • Conduct legislative advocacy: participation in legislative meetings, crafting persuasive letters, communication with legislative offices, and other advocacy as required

California Campus Camp

The California Campus Camp is our annual training for students, faculty, and staff to learn and share the essential skills of community organizing, democratic participation and leadership development. The camp is meant to foster strong relationships within and across our California community college campuses, grounded in the specific needs and opportunities of our respective communities. Sessions focus on practical skills in democratic political action such as one-on-one volunteer outreach and leadership development, campaign messaging, power mapping and strategic planning, relationship building, and making good choices to lead healthy, sustainable and fulfilling lives while participating in effective political practices.

Duties:

  • Reach out to students and staff both at De Anza and at Colleges throughout the state, give presentations in person, via video and phone. 
  • Input data, update databases, web sites, and send emails.
  • Respond to routine inquiries and emails from students, faculty, and staff.
  • Coordinate logistics for outreach activities, meetings, and events.
  • Cooperate with College life’s administration and processes
  • And other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Organizational Skills: Someone who is highly organized, and able to track meticulous details. 
  • Able to take and follow directions, initiate and track work projects, work in collaborative teams, grow into new areas of experience and expertise, and where called for, work with minimal supervision. 
  • It involves using spreadsheet and mail chimp to keep track of potential candidates and where they are in the recruitment process.
  • Written and Verbal Communication Skills: Most of the work is spent communicating. We rely on your verbal communication skills to clearly articulate program benefits to potential participants, and rely on your written communication skills when the outreach process involves writing professional emails.
  • Interpersonal Skills and attitude: It is vital that organizing interns possess the interpersonal skills of compassion, positivity and patience. All three of these skills are used daily in outreach and in-reach at De Anza and on other campuses. Commitment to social justice and community empowerment essential. 
  • Other Teamwork skills:
    • Reliable:  You want to be a reliable team member so that your coworkers can trust you. Make sure you stick to deadlines, and complete any tasks you are assigned to promote team-building and trust. This will help you gain your colleagues’ trust.
    • Respectful:  People will be more open to communicating with you if you convey respect for them and their ideas. Simple actions like using a person's name, making eye contact, and actively listening when a person speaks will make the person feel appreciated.
    • Conflict Management and commitment to clear communication:Organizing can be joyful and fulfilling and invariably it will include stress and frustration. An important teamwork skill is being able to mediate problems between team members. All members of the team must be committed to clear and positive communication and peaceful and positive resolution of tension and disputes. 
  • Salary: part time with variable hours with most work taking place late fall and early winter terms. Pay rate between $15 and $16 per hour, starting from Sept 24th until end of June 2019.

Issues: We are engaging in advocacy around a range of issues including affordable housing, legislative & budgetary support for community college students and faculty, and institutional transformation at Foothill-De Anza and throughout the community college system to eliminate racism from our lives and our society. Our goal is to organize and empower students and faculty members on issues of common betterment.
 
Spring of 2022 campaigns: Progressive  San Jose mayoral candidate Cindi Chavez; Re-elect progressive Assemblymember Alex Lee representing the values of students and younger voters to fight for universal health care, free education and other measures to raise up working families; advance affordable housing right here at Foothill-De Anza for students, faculty and staff; voter registration and voter engagement; legislative lobbying on key bills to support community college students. 
 
Non-native english speakers!!! Do you speak a language other than english? WE WANT YOU!!! We will be doing voter outreach in non-english-speaking communities. Vietnamese, Spanish, Mandarin and Cantonese especially.
 
We will also be reaching out to faculty to invite them to support/continue to support the Faculty Association Political Action Committee . We want to ensure voices of students are adequately raised up and heard by our College and District leadership.
 
Our History: Since 2012, FA PAC student interns have fought for, and won, increases in the minimum wage, massive increases in funding for community colleges, and strong political representation in our state legislature, and policies and funding for affordable housing.  Interns have organized training workshops and advocacy trips involving hundreds of students, have participated in legislative lobbying and other grassroots political advocacy work, and have achieved substantial gains for community college students by participating in electoral campaigns.
 
Spring Volunteer Meeting Times STARTING 4/11/22:. Wednesdays, 5;30 - 7:30; Fridays 5:30 -7:30 pm;  other times TBA all via Zoom.  You must be free during at least one of these times to work with us. Orientation will take place during Week 3 & 4 of the quarter.

California Youth Leadership Corps

De Anza College VIDA - California Youth Leadership Corps Paid Community Field Placement Application: Spring 2021 

 Participants in CYLC – De Anza College will earn college credit and be provided paid internships as an integral part of a learn-and-earn pathway that can lead to a career in community change.  

The CYLC – De Anza College aims to help youth with low incomes and youth of color to find meaningful employment doing work that is of benefit to their communities, while also helping them learn community organizing skills. Students will be placed with partner organizations who do work in our communities. Immigration status, and age are not barriers to participation. Participants do not need to have a high school diploma to enroll at De Anza College.  

Participate in a 10-week paid field placement for 10-20 hours per week at a grassroots community organization or mentoring other corps members.

  • Participate in team meetings, trainings, and mentorship.  
  • Get $15 per hour for internship hours and meetings.  
  • Students who complete the program will receive a $500 bonus at the end. 
  • Sign up for 6 quarter units of coursework designed for this program, which count toward De Anza College’s Certificate in Leadership and Social Change.  
  • Each student will be eligible for up to $10,000 over a two-year period for this work.  

     

Spring Program April 6- June 25 

The Spring class is Grassroots Democracy: Leadership and Power ICS 27.  

It meets Tuesdays 6:00-8:50 pm and Thursday 7:00-7:50 pm April 6-June 22.  

The community internship runs April 19- June 25.
